During my last semester of college, I took a Communication Capstone class where we developed a website as our social justice initiative. The social justice initiative was largely motivated by researching and studying how various cultures, storytelling, art, and activism have become the main drivers of social impact in the community of New Haven. The initiative also payed particular attention to the most culturally gravitational aspects of the Black Lives Matter movement, one of which being expression through creation.

Half of the class put together a documentary that was compiled of clips from interviews with muralists, protestors and activists. The other half of the class (including myself) researched the history of activism in New Haven and wrote several essays about the importance of activism as they relate to generating support for the Black Lives Matter movement.

This project taught me about the importance of self-educating about social justice issues and the various cultural groups that carry social movements in our communities. During my research, I learned to appreciate several monumental events in history that occurred right in the city of New Haven. These events heavily contributed to the civil rights and social justice movements that opened an expressive community for New Haven artists and creators alike.
